Hockey talk.

“When you’re having a tough stretch, all the experts come out with their opinions. The truth of the matter is, if they knew anything about the game they’d be in it.”

– Washington Capitals GM George McPhee on the fantastic HBO series 24/7.

  1. You know, that’s a good sound byte, but I don’t think it’s entirely accurate. It’s possible for somebody to deeply understand a topic, a hobby or a profession, but not be engaged in it. Additionally, the world is full of wise and useful theorists who knew a lot about a topic, but aren’t practitioners.

For McPhee’s example specifically, it’s easy to imagine that somebody might prefer to be a reporter or a pundit than a scout.

  2. You’re absolutely right Darren, although I think the truth probably lies somewhere in the murky middle of all that generally. I think there are many reporters and the like who would actually prefer to be in the thick of it as opposed to observing, just as I think in theatre some of our critics wish they could actually write a play.

In the case of McPhee’s quote the absolute truth might be more like “when you are having a tough stretch, you look for ways to make yourself feel ok.”
